Sometimes what looks like a choice between styles, or an argument
that one way is better than the other, stems fundamentally from
a quest for power. The English language (with its vocabulary and
structure from multiple sources) provides ample room for these
struggles. Do you have any reason to think that the basis for
your problem derives only from technical issues of translation,
grammar and style?

Additionally, when you find yourself in a battle it can be helpful
to step back and observe whether some third party is directing it,
through something like, "Let's you and he fight!"

Oh, and to answer your actual question, your side is correct.
