At first, it was very hard to see the true value. I'd kept my contacts
on my own for years, and for the first few years LinkedIn was nothing
more than a searchable repository with a kind of "Six Degrees of
Separation" feel to it (though I still couldn't link to Kevin Bacon).
But as of late they've been adding Q&A features and such, making the
tools a lot more valuable.
I'd say that especially for contractors and hiring/job seeking, this
is an excellent means of networking. A company can pose a question or
post an opening and you can not only hear about it but be directly
recommended by a mutual contact.
