I believe that the 1099 is provided by US companies to (1) report to the
IRS that they paid you the money so that (2) it becomes a legitimate
expense for them.
Similarly, if we sub work to someone, for amounts over some minimum, we
must provide them a 1099 with a copy to the IRS. Else we can't claim
that as a business expense.
