The website for TIM-RS (at http://www.fct.de/produkte/tim-rs/index-e.html) provides good info in both English and German. TIM-RS appears to support the use of MS Word, Epic (a.k.a. Arbortext) and FrameMaker. It has XML features for FrameMaker and something called XMetaL. It appears to provide resource management as well as integrated methods for document production. That should mean it can help you keep track of a plethora of versions of illustrations or examples, and can combine material from various sources into a single document.

I would not be afraid to use it, obgleich ich die deutsche Sprache fast gut lesen kann.
