The only certification for writers I know of that is widely
recognized by employers is the one issued to medical
writers by the American Medical Writers Association.
Obviously, this is of little value if you're not a medical
writer or planning on becoming one.

If you're looking to get a foot in the door of a particlular
company, govt agency, nonprofit organization, etc., that
puts a lot of stock in certs, find out what they prefer and
get that. For new grads with no work experience, the
certificates issued by various academic institutions may
help one to stand out from a field of other new grads
with none.

Generally, though, except for the above circumstances,
you won't derive much value from the effort.
