Faster watermarker for PDFs

I currently use Acrobat 6.0 to add a watermark that identifies obsolete
documents (Document => Add Watermark & Background). Obsolete documents
are saved only as PDFs, and the watermark is required by our procedures.

Even with a GB of RAM, Acrobat takes a long time to place the watermark.
It also dramatically increases the document size; I solve this problem
with File => Reduce File Size, but that's also pretty time-consuming.

Is there a faster tool for placing watermarks on PDFs? And if that tool
also increases the file size significantly, is there a faster tool for
reducing PDF file size?
