It depends.

"Backward-compatible" = an application, system, or process that is
compatible with previous versions.

"Backwards-compatible" = a person who gets along with uneducated people.

Dictionary.com indicates that backward and backwards are
interchangeable, but all but one of their examples present "backward" as
the preferred choice.
