Subject:RE: Salutation Question: Hi Fred, or Hi, Fred ? From:"Hickling, Lisa (TOR)" <lhickling -at- Express-Scripts -dot- com> To:"Pinkham, Jim" <Jim -dot- Pinkham -at- voith -dot- com>, "Techwr-l" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com> Date:Mon, 5 Nov 2007 14:47:51 -0500
Sorry I wasn't specific enough. I meant to ask the question within the
context of composing a letter (as a segue from the comma/colon thread),
for example:
Hello, Fred [salutation]
How are Wilma, Dino, and little Pebbles? [body]
Does the direct address rule apply here? Lauren's point about treating
the "Hi", "Hello" the same as "Dear" summarizes my argument. However,
I'm not clear on whether there is a case for "Dear, Fred" out there.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Lisa H.

Well, friends, I've always done the "Hi, Lauren..." thing, some artifact
of long-ago grammar education. And, yes, it is correct. Turns out it's
the rule of direct address. See http://www.grammarerrors.com/punctuation.html.
Until next time,
Jim
