I know someone that works for a large company that employs a truck load
of Tech Writers. Although tech writing/editing is 75% of his job,
corporate is reluctant to raise his compensation to the level of TW
because his title is (like mine) "Publications Specialist" and the HR
folks do not have a clue what that is. He's losing $$$ just because of
the name of his job slot. Now his boss has to justify the pay rise
levels that he's getting compared to other Pubs Specialists who do grunt
work.
On my own company's job site, TW'ing is described in six different ways
including just-plain "writer" or "writer/editor".
It's getting out of hand
Blessings,
Darren

One situation I've been in in the past is where the company I am working
for is bought out and the new company doesn't have any TW/DWs and hasn't
a clue what to call you or what salary grade to give you. It's pretty
much HR roulette.

These definitions that change
from company to company are killers.

You know it's time to update the CV when you get a promotion (and a tiny
raise or no raise) from "technical writer" to "documentation
specialist".

And in one or two years they do it again, this time from "documentation
specialist" to "technical writer".
