Disclaimer: I am not an STC member and haven't been for over 20 years. Being
a member did not affect my career, just as not being a member has not hurt
my career. So, most of the discussion about STC is ignored...

However, Richard's comments about STC using BLS for their salary survey are
right on the mark. Anytime you get the "guvmint" involved, accuracy flows
out the door. This is not a slam on government workers, but an observation
on government categorizations. I've been clumped with Journalists,
screenwriters, actors, videographers, copywriters, and a host of other
professions that may or may not be remotely connected to technical writing.

I have to also agree with Richard in that if Technical Writers inflate their
salary when applying for a job, then it makes sense that employers would do
the opposite in order to counter those requests. So, if nobody is really
telling the truth, what value do those surveys offer managers hiring new
employees or trying to get a raise for existing staff?
