I disagree with your analogy. Trying to differentiate yourself from others
is not like trying to be cool and it is being yourself. It's called
marketing. You want a job that a gazillion others are equally qualified. How
do you make yourself standout from that crowd? At least half the people have
read "How to Make Your Resume (or Cover Letter) Stand Out" and most produce
exceptional resumes and cover letters. It's what you do to make your
material stand out from the rest of those exceptional applicants, and a lot
of luck, that will get you that all important first interview.

I've been lucky throughout my career in that very seldom do I have any major
competition because in most cases I've created the position, whether it be
as a writer or as a manager. I do my research and then approach the
appropriate manager/corporate officer with a formal proposal. It doesn't
work all the time, but it always produces great leads which often end up as
a better option.

I also have a great personality, I'm extremely likeable, unbelievably
talented and I'm humble...
