When I was a hiring manager, I was struck by how many
resumes were boring, badly written, had typos,
contained hyperbolic claims, or seemed to show little
awareness of what I needed. For many jobs, all these
would be forgiveable...but not for a tech writer.
So...to differentiate oneself, tell the hiring manager
your story, in the form of one or two problems
successfully solved. Make it interesting and personal,
and make it relevant to the job you want. Clean up the
typos. Have a friend proof it. Stay away from
impossible claims.
