Thank you for all the replies. Thought I would fill you in on what
finally worked.

I could find no pdfmaker.dot file on my system.

I did a search for "pdfmaker.dot" and while typing in the the phrase,
the term "pdfmaker.dot missing" appeared in the suggestions. I clicked
on it. I picked this page
(http://help.lockergnome.com/office/pdf-maker-missing-Word-ftopict684398
.html), which is older but still offered valid advice:

"Take a look at Help - About Microsoft Word - Disabled Items, and see if
the
Adobe PDF stuff is listed there as disabled. If so, then try enabling
and
see if that fixes things."

It did fix things. Imagine that. Until next time.
