Hi Rebecca,

The DITA Users organization has a web-based DITA Open Toolkit that processes
sample DITA documentation sets to multiple output formats - HTML/web,
PDF/print, and Eclipse/Help.

http://www.ditausers.org

It lets you see how DITA works without knowing the XML backend processing.

They also have some "pictures" of DITA topics and maps that others on this
mail thread might like:
