I didn't have problems importing PDFs into RH X5 or RH6. There were
conversion problems, but I could access the text and edit it.
Flare does not appear to offer any means to import PDFs at all.
We might have a manual called UserGuide.pdf that needs to be updated.
I can suck UserGuide.pdf into RH6 and do what I need to do. Then I can
export to Word and convert back to PDF. Done.
It does not appear that Flare will allow me to import UserGuide.pdf at
all.

Hi Craig:
My application for Flare was Webhelp with PDF pages embedded (linked via
an icon) in an HTML page. That worked fine, but I was not putting PDFs
in the table of contents or expecting the PDF to open within Flare. The
HTML page opened, and clicking the linked icon opened the PDF file when
I tested this.
Of course, I didn't expect Flare to open up a PDF natively--is that what
you were looking to do?
The knowledgebase that I built included a "block" at the top right of
each page with information about accessing the PDF file and an icon.
That's how I did it in RoboHelp v5x also, because I was never able to
reliably open PDFs in RoboHelp either.
Not sure it this helps you, but I thought I'd chime in.

A little while ago I asked which application you would recommend for
help authoring, RoboHelp or Flare. Most everyone said Flare. Okay, I
downloaded and have been testing Flare. Everything is working out well
enough. I'm adjusting to the learning curve. However, I remembered most
of our legacy material resides in Word docs and PDF files.
I couldn't figure out how to import PDFs into Flare, so I had to email
and ask. The answer was surprising: Flare does not import PDF fies.
Flare imports Word docs and entire RoboHelp projects, but not PDF files.
Ouch.
If anyone has run into this and solved it, please let me know.
