I did the very opposite, but for reasons of returned value. I haven't
been able to make it to a meeting in my area in a couple of years (and
there have only been a handful of meetings at that). I'd much prefer
having an active local chapter, because the face to face is extremely
valuable.

Even with conferences, the content comes in SECOND for me. First is
always face to face. Who's going to be there? How many new faces am I
going to get to put to known names? How many new connections can I
make?

The content can be learned anywhere. It's the people who are most
important in any professional organization.

I've seen people mention guilds and such, and even there it comes back
to the people. Content may be King in our profession, but without a
thriving populace the King would starve to death.
