Human Factors has been and continues to be a
major engineering factor in many fields (aircraft
cabin and equipment access are probably something
like 50%-75% HF). I've never had "usability" come
up as a documentation issue, but don't write in the
consumer products field, so our end user is what
we call an "ignorant expert" (they have high levels
of training, skill and experience in installing, using
and servicing similar products, mostly require
the specifics on what makes ours different from
the ones they already know and require no
hand-holding). The only people who ever read
our docs who are not trained professionals are
people who buy copies to try to simulate the
operation and performance in plug-in modules
for Microsoft Flight Simulater.
