Throughout my working career, I have always maintained that I will commit to
either the job or the clock - employer's preference. In my first performance
review in my current position, I was criticized for leaving 10 minutes early
a few times (despite having worked through lunch and dialed in from home).
It wasn't worth getting upset over; it just clarified to me that the company
required me to commit to the clock, not the job. It's not been over three
years, and other than a few minutes here and there and the occasional
lunchtime, I have never worked overtime and nor will I, overtime or not. I
strive to do what I need to do within our standard working hours. But that
was their choice. If they ever decided to require me to work overtime
without additional compensation, I probably would feel the same way as the
person in this lawsuit does.
