XML is a great feather in your cap. And even if you're not an "expert", it's good to have some basic ideas. One area of the XML universe that is particular handy to grasp would be DITA. It's not the be-all-end-all, but DITA is a handy standard that has been getting some serious traction in the past few years.
My current client is very interested in it, and my last client was determined to have it...so it's handy that I picked it up.
