Hello Kevin,

To me it appears that the problem lies in the link. Unless you want it to be absolute (which is not right now), then try making it as relative as possible.

If for instance whole help is available in "800315-003lunapcm_2-4_webhelp" folder, use only <a href="800315-003lunapcm_2-4_webhelp/startpage.htm">. Likewise, if the whole help is available in "docs/800315-003lunapcm_2-4_webhelp/startpage.htm", use <a href="docs/800315-003lunapcm_2-4_webhelp/startpage.htm">.

Try modifying the path and I am pretty sure you'll find the right one.

Mladen

Subject: File Not Found puzzle in WebHelp

All,
Perhaps one of the smarter people can explain what's going on here.

I have a WebHelp system, created in MadCap Flare.
The entry is via a separate START_HERE.htm page, where a link points to
the startpage.html for the WebHelp, which uses the default page (in my
case, the first page of the product Configuration instructions).

Here's the trick:

If you enter the Help (stored on a file server, not served by a web
server) with any browser, you land on that Configuration page. Goody.
If you click to another page in the ToC, then click the Configuration
page (in the ToC), you land on that page. Goody.

If you enter the Help (stored on your local computer, not served by a
web server) with any browser, you land on that Configuration page.
Goody.
If you click to another page in the ToC, then select the Configuration
page (in the ToC), you get a File Not Found error. NOT GOODY.

Any other page/topic accessed from the ToC always opens just fine.

My question: If there's something for a browser to dislike about pages
viewed as local files, why does it only start disliking that ONE page,
and only on SECOND and SUBQUENT access??

Thanks for any clarification and education you can offer.
If it helps, here's the link in my external START_HERE.htm page:
<a href="./docs/800315-003lunapcm_2-4_webhelp/startpage.htm"
target="_blank"1>Luna PCM 2.4 Help System </a><br>
(mind the wrap) That's the one that opens the Configuration topic
properly. It's only subsequent visits to that page via the Help's own
ToC that get the File Not Found error.

- Kevin
