A friend recently forwarded the venerable joke, "Declaration Of

Apart from its amusement value, it reminds me (as a technical editor)
that sometimes we editors need to take a large step back and ponder
the rhetorical purpose of a manuscript before we dive in with the
sharp knives. <g>
