To answer the original question ;)  -- Yes.

I have known people who have applied for positions at Microsoft, and I know 
folks who work at Microsoft (as we all probably do :)  The interviewing/hiring 
process is rigorous and all the people I know who work there are top notch. 
The ones I've met are dedicated (most work long hours) but remain upbeat 
and enthusiastic. All the qualities one wants in a potential employee (smart, 
hardworking, and nice to be around). 

This is my experience -- as always, YMMV.
