This is easy for you to test, no?

Depends on the version of Word, but I believe graphics are stored
internally in PNG format.

So, number of pixels and color depth will affect the file size of a doc
file that contains images. Remember, a GIF is limited to 256 colors, so
if you test, make sure you test a BMP with 256 colors and a PNG with 256
colors to the GIF, which cannot have more than 256 colors; all must have
the same number of pixels, of course.

IOW, if you embed a PNG in a Word document, and it's 24-bit, then the
resulting file will be larger than if you had embedded a GIF. Why?
Because the GIF downsamples the color to 8-bit and you are thus not
embedding the same image in both cases.

Where I work, we actually insert graphics into our documents, rather
than linking them. We been told to save graphics as GIF files rather
than BMP files to keep the Word documents from getting too big. But does
it really make a difference? I thought Word converted a graphic into its
own proprietary format within a document, and that that format was the
same regardless of the format of the original graphic. Is that so?
