One can read (most of) the posts in the current "How did you get started in tech writing?" thread as providing evidence for tech writing being a "fallback" career. Not a disliked career choice, just not the first ambition of the posters.
Of course, in today's world, the concept of having "a career" in one occupation is suspect.
