This is California and with the type of test it was, there is no concern if
there is no report.  In this case, the lab was not paid, I was not notified
of lack of payment, and my doctor was not told about the results until after
the lab was paid two months later.  I would have liked some notification
that my insurer was not paying the lab.  The lab does not release results to
patients, so I don't know how I would be able to see the results.  But if
I'm in a situation like that again, then I'll follow-up to make sure that
parties are getting paid and I'll demand to see my results.
