I've used both approaches depending on the complexity of the screen. If
you are writing procedures, you might also consider breaking the screen
apart into smaller chunks, using a "big picture" screen shot at the top
of a section and call-out screen shots in the step by step sections.

I'm struggling with "usable" screen captures. I tend to circle and
annotate screen elements with word bubbles, but those tend to get busy
fast. I thought about circling and annotating with circled letters, then

referring to those letters below. Is that more or less useful? How do
you annotate your screen shots?
