Here's a link to an essay attempting to establish the /r/e/a/l/ rules of
English.

http://www.wilbers.com/part22.htm

I'm passing it along mostly because of the swell quote there, attributed
to EB White:

âEnglish usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment, and
education â sometimes itâs sheer luck, like getting across the street.â

I'm like, hooray for EB White, Michael West, and the ones who cut a
dignified figure when crossing the metaphorical street. That's a hard
thing to do while shaking a fist at impinging pseudo-rules. I suppose
the dignity comes in time, given dedication and daily practice :-)
