1. Perform research on the subject of the work technical writers actually
do.

2. Determine whether you can do that work yourself by attempting to do a
typical technical writing task on a project of your own choosing (software,

3. Ask a working technical writer to be your mentor.

4. Ask your mentor to critique your technical writing task.

5. Talk with your mentor on the prospects for your getting work doing
projects similar to the project you jut completed or try to do better on
another project.

6. Continue consulting with your mentor until you have some sense of what's
right for you.
