Interesting point of view -- I don't find it unfortunate at all.

Career paths for technical writers has often been discussed on this list. A project
or product manager position is certainly a valid career path for a technical writer.
Other often discussed topic are gaining respect for the work you do, adding value
to a company from a technical writing capacity, and ensuring job security. Wearing
multiple hats helps contribute to all of these.

At the very least, having a variety of responsibilities helps ensure you are never
bored with the work you are doing, and never bored because there is no work.
