A little late now for prevention, but if not already done, I'd suggest
always starting with a clean document, especially on a project of this
size and consequence. Take the file you're bringing in. Set all
paragraphs to normal. Strip away all formatting, extra spaces, etc. Save
it as .txt file. Then import the text file into your clean new document,
the one you've already created from your clean, uncorrupted, carefully
designed template. Then apply the styles.

If you've already done this, I'm not sure what else to tell you.

BTW, PT is right on the paragraph character -- it is ^p.

HTH,
Jim

This has happened to me in other versions of Word, particularly when
using a template with macros in it.

Not sure about the version you are working in, but you used to be able
to do a search and replace to fix this problem.

Search on the paragraph (you'll have to look up the character--used to
be something like ^p) and replace with the paragraph style, which you
should be able to choose from a style list. It's best to do the search
and replace a paragraph at a time, especially if all the paragraph's
have lost their style link.

This might work, although I'd try it on a copy of your document in case
it does not help.

HTH,
PT
