Possible reasons usually include:

1. Recruiter trying to keep client company identity secret (less likely
if the entire posting is anonymous; recruiters usually put their names
on listings).

2. Company is doing hiring on its own and doesn't want to be flooded
with phone calls and drop-ins.

3. Company doesn't want outsiders to know it is expanding or working on
something new.

4. Company is looking for replacement for someone who doesn't know
he/she is going to be replaced.
