I would have done the same, but assess the audience for a humor factor. If
people are too serious, then it wouldn't be worth the potential reaction. I
would also ask the employees nearby if they were responsible for the error
and avoid insulting them if they were.

If I was feeling a little wound up, then I may have asked if they knew the
difference between "Santa Claus" and "Santa Clause." There was a Tim Allen
movie (or three) about the latter. I could also go off on a lecture about
our weak educational system.

I was thinking this morning about spelling errors that I made when I was
younger. I made a little notice congratulating the employee of the month
and I spelled congratulations as "Congragulations!" Somebody pointed it out
to me and I quickly fixed it. I would rather have known of the error so I
could fix it then to let the error go with more people seeing it and knowing
that I made it.

I do, however, want to correct a lot of misspelled store signs. I don't
always have a pen, though.
