I'm with Kevin on this. Linguistic drift is fine, but not every
change is progress. If there are two words with different meanings
and we start to use them interchangeably, we've lost the ability to
make a useful distinction. Infer/imply is one old example.
Reluctant/reticent is another that's happening before or eyes (or
ears). In Australia it's become common for people to say that they
are 'reticent' to do or say something. You can't say this is an
example of a word evolving to fulfill a need, because the word
'reluctant' already fills it perfectly.
