Which style guide to use beyond Chicago would depend on the domain the
graduate is going to be working in (e.g., MLA, APA). Or are you asking
for yourself? (Still depends on the domain. For a while I was using
the Schlumberger Oilfield Glossary
(http://www.glossary.oilfield.slb.com/) on a daily basis.)
For dictionaries, I use http://m-w.com continually, and would buy M-W
if I wanted a dead-tree edition.
For usage guides, I recommend the M-W Concise Dictionary of English
Usage. It treats all the issues that have vexed usage writers through
the centuries, and then provides sensible, empirically-based advice.
