I expect that this is exactly it. But if they use technospeak with
their larger audiences, at least they can't be accused of dumbing
things down. And perhaps there's a certain portion of the audience
that likes being placed on that footing because it makes them feel
smart.
It's a sociolinguistic thing, I think. You can use the principles of
rhetoric to explain why it's bad, but that won't get you anywhere near
why it happens. Why it happens is, to me, more interesting. Anyone can
wag a finger and say "bad writer".
