Thereby driving the query (and possible answers) nearer to the top of
the search results for the next poor seeker. I often find Techwr-l on
the first or second page of returns from my searches.

I think that's because the topic or the first paragraph will have the
keyword, the text will be, well, text (not pictures, flash, clusters of
links, etc.), and the keyword is then repeated in further text,
inspiring the spiders to index that post and value it highly.
