RE: Meetings -- ARRGGHHH!!!

I use a combination of the following approaches:

- I usually bring work to a meeting, so if it goes astray, I can sit there
and edit something ... or "take notes" (not necessarily related to the
meeting).  It's usually handy to have my calendar with me, too.

- I take a "break".  Implication is "bathroom break" but ... there's nothing
that says I can't walk down the hall, do some jumping jacks, check my email,
eat a sandwich, or make a phone call - i.e. take an extended break.  No one
really knows if you ran into your boss in the hall if you're gone for 10-15
minutes.  (Suggestion:  Take a big glass of water to the meeting - it gives
you an "out" after a length of time.)

- If it's my boss' meeting, I negotiate my presence in FUTURE meetings of
the same kind.

Some organizations seem to have really effective meetings.  By that I mean
an agreed-upon agenda (and purpose), everyone comes prepared to discuss the
matter at hand, and someone keeps the meeting on track.  That's a whole
different ball game!
