I think we were talking about the differences between *full-timers
working for a single employer who are paid hourly and receive overtime*
(non-exempt), and *full-timers working for a single employer who are
paid a set salary* (exempt).

Initially, I don't think anyone was talking about contract work, which
is an altogether different animal, as you know.

A step down? Are those of us who are contractors less noble, less
professional? Could we be more flagrantly snobbish?

By the way, in light of our economy, what is a "permanent" employee.
Frankly, I don't believe such a category exists in the minds of a
corporate
HR department or board.

It's of no particular concern to me what other professionals think of my
status as an independent contractor. I'm just mercenary enough to do
what I
can or must to pay the mortgage and feed the mouths therein.

Cheers,

|It sounds like you're speaking as a contractor/consultant for
|project-specific clients. For some of us who are permanent
|employees (as opposed to contractors), an hourly wage would be
|a step down, regardless of its amount.
