In the US, "contractor" is often misused to refer to
people who are in fact direct-hire temporary
employees of a company that is the contractor.
Most of the time, these people who are not company
employees but are also not really contractors because
they don't carry their own contracts are the lowest rung
on the food chain: poorly paid hourly workers who
lack both prestige and benefits.
