My brother is a general aviation mechanic and spent 9 years in the Navy
working on F14/16. One year I was visiting while he was doing an
inspection on an aircraft. He made me sit on a stool in the hanger and
not talk to him (a great feat) until he was finished. When I complained,
he responded that the pilot and passenger's lives were in his hands and
there aren't any shoulders to pull over on in the air.
I would suspect that part of the problem with the mechanics is the
pressure put on our armed services due to fighting two wars, lack of
resources: men, material, money. Still, there is no excuse for putting
aircraft in poor repair into the sky.
Not everyone can be Captain Scully, and he had some very heavy criticism
of the current commercial aviation situation.
