Another option you might consider is Evernote: http://www.evernote.com/.

It is a "note-taking" app that I've found works well as a journal,
both for work and personal use. They have a version that can be
installed and used on a thumb drive, although I have never personally
used that version -- I use both the Windows and Mac desktop versions.

You can set up all sorts of tags for your notes to fairly easily
navigate and search.

The "clipping" functionality is also handy -- I use this to save
articles from web sites. I also often clip emails into the app to make
my own notes on followups and such.
