Subject:Using CMS with DITA/FM8 From:Joey P <joeyp2008 -at- gmail -dot- com> To:techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com Date:Sat, 21 Mar 2009 00:09:09 +0800
Hi everyone,
Firstly, thanks for the career advice last year. It really helped me think
through my situation and eventually make a decision I was happy with.
So, at my (relatively new) workplace, we're thinking of switching to
structured authoring with DITA in FM8. I have a rough idea of how this could
work as far as actually writing material and outputting it is concerned, but
what I really have no idea about is managing content from a central
location.
We write manuals which share a lot of content. And now we need to use some
of that content for online support materials too. But we're constantly
revising the content as product features and safety text/legal bits are
modified. What we really need is a way to modify a given content item once,
save it to a central location, and then have it updated in every document
that uses that item, either automatically or by flagging the item as changed
and then updating it manually.
What kind of CMS or other software might suit our needs? We don't have a
large budget and we certainly can't spend a lot of time and money getting a
customized solution. We need something that's pretty easy to use out of the
box. Is there anything like that available?
Thanks very much in advance for any suggestions.
Joe
