For combining compactness with readability in
printed form, Times New Roman is a wonderful
font. But because it was the Microsoft Word
default font for so many years, it sends the
message (even if untrue) that no particular
thought has gone into the choice of typeface
and quite possibly the people involved don't
even know what the Font menu is for.
Your experience may differ, but in my workplaces
there was a big swing to fonts that distinguish
the corporation from the common Times-and-Helvetica
crowd, a swing back to standard Windows fonts when
portability issues emerged, and a delighted mass
flight away from the whole question when content
management systems started taking control of the
output away from the writers.
