You can see this in common English surnames such as
Smith and Cooper, and my husband's surname is Boucher,
which is French for "butcher."

It's also one of the reasons that Jewish genealogy is
so difficult: when hereditary surnames became established
in Europe in the eighteenth century, many families were
given surnames that reflected professions (such as
"Schneider" for tailor or "Farber" for a painter")
but they are obviously not related to each other.
