I'd use whatever terminology is used by the OS your product runs on.
We've recorded "check" and "clear" in our style guide as exceptions to
the MS MoS, but I'd have no hesitation whatsoever in just following the
MS MoS and using "select" and "clear."

Others on this list have objected to our use of "check" as it allows for
confusion with the terms "verify" or "inspect."

But on paper, I "check" check boxes (that's what they're called). I
don't "clear" them, though. I just rub out the check mark -- so that's
no help.
