I think the smart thing to do would be to use the fast-loading format for the
initial site view, and link the images to the slower-loading versions or a
high-res PDF of the entire portfolio that can be downloaded. Many viewers lack
the patience to wait while high-res images download without advance warning, and
some of us have our browsers set to open Acrobat as an application for viewing
PDFs because viewing them in the browser is like watching grass grow.
There wouldn't be anything wrong with the site as-is as a "teaser" (except for
some of the broken links it contains), if each lossy image lead to a better
quality version.
