I was hired on that basis, late in the dot.bomb bubble - when we were two or three companies ago. 

Now, to translate the above...

I was hired by the veep of Engineering during the two weeks that the HR lady was away on vacation (and she gave me the hairy eyeball for about three years following that social gaffe...) for a position with a company that was just one of very few of its type (so not many peers or people with pre-existing knowledge). Then, we've been bought a few times since and gotten a bit bigger (originally 35 people, now about 1400). We are now, pretty much, the 900 pound gorilla in our space.

Anyway, I hope my next gig is as easy to get as this one was.  :-) 

My second-favorite thing is to learn something I didn't already know, and teach other people (which is also how consolidate my learning... or find out how much more I need to learn it).
