No, I wouldn't, and the reason I wouldn't is that "ten dollars" is a sum, 
an amount, a notional value. It might consist of ten one-dollar notes or 
coins, or twenty fifty-cent pieces, or ... whatever. We need not, in fact, 
know what it consists of materially because it doesn't matter. "Ten 
dollars" denotes an abstract value, not a collection of objects.

"Twenty years have taught me" is perfectly correct. "Twenty years has 
taught me" is also correct. Use whichever best suits your meaning. My 
twenty-something years occurred one at a time -- not in a lump.
