TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
As Geoff says, if you're documenting a procedure, you shouldn't
include anything irrelevant to the procedure.
If you're writing a general description of a dialog box for some sort
of reference, you should be supplying information that's not on
screen.
A prose description of a dialog box or wizard panel that adds nothing
to what users can see for themselves onscreen is uninformative and
degrades the documentation by making the user wade through
uninformative fillter find whatever useful information (if any) is in
the doc. I've inherited docs that consisted entirely of such pointless
nonsense.
