Robert touches on a very common use for Visio: various kinds of flow charts
& diagrams. I experienced the same frustrations, and looked for a better,
but inexpensive, flowcharting tool. I've recently started using
FlowBreeze, http://www.breezetree.com/, and have been very happy with it.
